At Steve’s Pantry, we believe that no one should go hungry—and everyone should be treated with dignity, compassion, and a warm smile.
What began as an act of kindness in 2010 has grown into one of the most trusted community support resources in the greater New Braunfels area. Today, Steve’s Pantry serves more than 2,000 individuals each month, offering not only groceries and hygiene items, but also access to showers, laundry facilities, laptops, counseling, and ready-to-eat meals—all completely free of charge.
But our story started with one man.
Steve Zunk was a New Braunfels resident living with serious health challenges. When a local physician connected Steve with the pastors at Gruene United Methodist Church, a powerful relationship began. Over the next ten months, pastors and volunteers visited Steve regularly—bringing him food, driving him to doctor appointments, and even building a ramp to make his home accessible.
As Steve’s condition worsened and he moved into hospice care, the church community helped clean out his home—donating or selling furniture on his behalf. When asked what he wanted to do with the food in his pantry, Steve gave a simple, heartfelt response:
“You take it. Isn’t that what churches do? Feed hungry people?”
That single moment of generosity sparked something bigger.
Inspired by Steve’s spirit, Gruene UMC launched a small food distribution effort—initially operating out of a closet in the church building. Over time, it grew into a 100% volunteer-led operation fueled by the generosity and unwavering commitment of people who wanted to make a difference.
Today, Steve’s Pantry stands as a living legacy—named in his honor, and carrying forward the same unconditional love he showed to others. We are proud to serve without judgment, without condition, and without barriers.
Whether you need help—or want to help—there’s a place for you at Steve’s Pantry.
